The Healing Power of Music

"One good thing about music when it hits you, you feel no pain." Bob Marley

Think of the last time you went to the gym. (If never, let's play pretend) You get on that treadmill and you start running, running, running...5 minutes goes by, 10, etc. You have your
favorite soundtrack playing in your ear. Time is of no importance. Something about those upbeat instrumentals and motivating lyrics keeps you going. Suddenly it dies ("I knew I should of charged it"). You continue to run but start noticing time going much slower and you start noticing that strain in you right leg. All of a sudden you are bored and unenergized.
But Why?
It's all about the rhythm. Some psychologists have suggested that "people have an innate preference for rhythms of two hertz, which is equivalent to 120 bpm. (beats per minute)...When running on a treadmill, however, most people seem to favor music around 160 bpm" When running to a beat/ rhythm the body conserves it's energy and uses it more efficiently. Listening to music also helps distract the brain from thinking about the physical needs of your body. Your brain is constantly keeping track of whats going on in your body and when you start to get tired your brain is telling your body, "that bench looks mighty comfortable over there." -Brain. When you listen to music it distracts you and you stop noticing or caring about that fatigue. especially when you have Down With the Sickness blazing in your ear.

What are your thoughts? What are your workout go to songs/motivational tracks to get you through the day? Comment below

  1. I totally agree man! I'm a runner and I run with music most of the time for motivation.
